Jayantha Dhanapala assumes duties

Veteran UN diplomat Jayantha Dhanapala today assumed duties as the Secretary General of the Peace Secretariat and as Senior Adviser to President Kumaratunga. Mr.Dhanapala will function directly under the President in these posts and will serve in an honorary capacity.

The Peace Secretariat was established
February 6, 2002, to institutionalize the Peace Process with the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Government. Staff members are drawn from both the government and private sectors and include specialists in diplomacy, law, strategy, communication, and research.

Jayantha Dhanapala was the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs from 1998 to 2003. He served for many years as a member of the Sri Lanka Foreign Service and was Ambassador in Geneva and in Washington D.C.

In February 1998 UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed Dhanapala as a Commissioner in the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) and the Head of the Special Group visiting the Presidential sites in Iraq.
