Values, ethics and civic consciousness are to be introduced into the school system. The Education Ministry now under the President has devised co-curricular activities and special assignments.

Phase one of the program will cover Grades 6 to 9 and will be launched by President Chandrika Kumaratunga at Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Gampaha on June 10.

The Ministry plans to introduce this special component of value education to other grades during the next two years.

The new program will encompass life competencies, teacher training, and an awareness program for Principals. The new programme aims to promote social harmony through inter-cultural activities and develop conflict resolution skills among students. The Education Ministry plans to obtain the assistance of media institutions to strengthen moral principles among the youth.
