Two
key bodies to aid government’s economic policy [June

President
Chandrika Kumaratunga by the powers vested in her by the Constitution
appointed two key bodies, to shape the Government’s
economic policy.
The
National Council for Economic Development [NCED] and a Strategic Enterprise
Management Agency [SEMA] were established in accordance with a UPFA
manifesto promise.
The
NCED is tasked with eliminating all administrative impediments obstructing
or delaying progress and to facilitate and assist the Government in the
effective implementation of its policies and development programs. The
Council will help translate the manifesto in to a comprehensive action plan.
It
will further ensure that Ministries and Government agencies function in a
coherent manner towards achieving the development goals of the country, by
coordinating their activities.
The
President appointed Dr. P.B. Jayasundera as Chairman and Secretary General
of the Council. The other members are, Prof. W.D. Lakshman, Mr. Sunil Mendis,
Mr. Mano Tittawella, Mr. Mahesh Amalean and Mr. Harry Jayewardene.
The
SEMA will facilitate and ensure the efficient management of strategic
enterprises in Sri Lanka. The aim being not to privatize but to improve the
efficiency and effectiveness of the Sri Lankan economy by putting these
enterprises on par with their private sector counterparts.
This
will be achieved by improving and consolidating the financial strength and
commercial viability of these enterprises.
Mr.
Mano Tittawella will act as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the
Agency while the other members include, Mr. Gamunu Gunathilaka, Mr. B.R.L.
Fernando, Mr. Lalith de Mel, Mr. Nihal Fonseka, Mr. J. Bandaranayke and Mr.
Rajan Britto.
