President Chandrika
Kumaratunga in a televised address
to the nation Saturday, June 12, enunciated her Government’s policies and
action plans for the future. She detailed some of the Government’s
important decisions and programmes that have already been implemented in the
past two months. Kumaratunga said the Government has worked out the detailed
plan of action to implement its policies as spelt out in the UPFA’s
manifesto.
On peace initiatives the
President said the Government is making a sustained and serious effort to
engage the LTTE in comprehensive peace negotiations to end all
confrontations, develop the North and East and address the grievances of the
minority communities, in a manner the reasonable aspirations of the Sinhala,
Tamil and Muslim communities are addressed.
“We are seeking an
effective compromise to the problem of how to deal with the long-term
importance of a lasting political settlement to the conflict and the
short-term need to urgently develop the North and East”, said President
Kumaratunga.
