Buddhist organizations have made representations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the gross commercial exploitation of the image of the Buddha by foreign traders and advertisers.

Instances of such exploitation of the Buddha image, on swimwear, in the internet, and compact discs with the image of the Buddha, were cited by the organizations in a petition filed in the Sri Lankan Supreme Court. They have demanded strict action to end this form of dereliction.

A Foreign Ministry communiqué says these organizations have requested Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar to take appropriate action to prevent such misuse, and take up the matter with the relevant authorities in the countries concerned.

Consequent to the meeting, the FM has directed all heads of Sri Lanka Missions to make representations to the relevant authorities in their countries of accreditation as well as to commercial establishments and take steps to remove the offending items from the marketplace.
