New Central Bank Governor appointed

President Chandrika Kumaratunga today appointed Mr. Sunil Mendis as the Governor of the Central Bank for a six year term, with effect from tomorrow, July 1, 2004.

Mr. Mendis retired recently as the Chairman of Hayley’s Group of companies, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and largest conglomerates. He is a member of the Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants (UK) Professional Sections 1-3.

Sunil Mendis was on the board of over 100 companies and several State Institutions in Sri Lanka and has also served on the boards of companies in USA, UK, Japan and Australia.

He takes over as Governor of the Central Bank from Mr. A.S. Jayawardene who completed his six year term today, June 30.
