The Cabinet of Ministers presided by President Chandrika Kumaratunga agreed to upgrade the Jaffna Technical College, to an institute of technology with an estimated cost of over USD 2 million. The Technical College established in 1959 is the only institute in the Jaffna district capable of providing technical education.

“Due to uncertain conditions there was no substantial development in technical education in the East and through this new programme youth in the area will get an opportunity to go for higher education”, Cabinet spokesman Minister Mangala Samaraweera said at a press briefing today.

The Cabinet also approved to present the Domestic Violence Bill to Parliament as early as possible to eradicate violence against women and children in the country.

“Under this Bill protection is available for women and children against both physical and emotional abuse”, said the spokesman.

Minister Samaraweera further said that the Cabinet also decided to conduct a comprehensive awareness programme on the Bill.
