The Government yesterday strongly condemned the suicide bombing in Colombo which killed four and injured ten others. The communiqué issued by the Government Information Department also commended state of alertness of the Security Forces who prevented the planned assassination of Minister Douglas Devananda and said “The perpetrators of this act show callous disregard for human lives and are reverting to violence as a means of settling disputes.”

A female suicide bomber detonated an explosive device within the precincts of the Kollupitiya Police Station, mid-day on 7 July, killing two Police personnel, two security assistants, injuring another seven Police personnel and three civilians.

The suicide bomber had been taken into custody by the Police on suspicion when she visited the Political Office of the Eelam People’s Democratic Party [EPDP] and sought to meet with Hon. Douglass Devananda, MP, Minister of Agricultural Marketing Development, Hindu Affairs and Minister Assisting Education and Vocational Training, and Leader of the EPDP.

The Government strongly condemns this attempted assassination through a targeted suicide mission, and the tragic loss of lives caused as a consequence.  The perpetrators of this act show callous disregard for human lives and are reverting to violence as a means of settling disputes.

The Government commends the high state of alertness of the Police and Security Forces, and wishes to reiterate its commitment to the maintenance of public security.

The Government expresses its profound sympathies to the families of the Police personnel and other security personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
