Devananda’s open request
[July 9, 2004 - 10.45 GMT]

Speaking to journalists from his Ministry soon after the incident on July 7, Minister Douglas Devananda asked the LTTE leader Prabakaran to meet ideology with ideology and not through killings.

The EPDP leader also told the LTTE leader not to kill and eliminate the Tamils in the name of Tamil Nationalism. He also requested Prabakaran to abandon the wrong path, if he was truly keen on the interests of the Tamil people, and come into the political mainstream.

Devanada  further said he was willing to forgive Prabakaran and step aside from competitive politics, if he was willing to give up violence and join the mainstream.

He also appealed to President Kumaratunga to continue undeterred with the peace process and find a solution to the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka.

Minister Devanada thanked the security personnel who always made sure of his safety.
