“Country
Forward” says President [July
12,
2004 - 6.00 GMT]
President
Kumaratunga yesterday urged people to shed all differences and dedicate
themselves to the Government's "Country Forward" programme.
“I greatly appreciate the confidence the people reposed in us and pledge
to uphold it untarnished at all times. Let us dedicate ourselves to the
sublime policy of "Country Forward," said the President in a media
release.
The UPFA won 105 out of the 118 electorates, during the Provincial Councils
elections held on Saturday, July 10. The elections were conducted in six
provinces of Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Western, North East and Central.
The Wayamba PC poll held in April was also won by the UPFA.
The voter turnout was between 45 per cent to 50 per cent, a low figure by
Sri Lankan standards.
The President said all political parties represented in Parliament should
understand the reality of the people's mandate which clearly shows the
people's choice.
“Let us march forward in unity, as one people, one nation,” she said.
