Sri Lanka to sign a UN arms treaty
[July 14, 2004 - 9.30 GMT]

Sri Lanka has acceded to the UN convention which prohibits the use of Certain Conventional Weapons. The Cabinet approved the proposal made by Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar to this effect. The UN discourages the use of weapons which are deemed to be, Excessively Injurious or to Have Indiscriminate Effects.

A Foreign Ministry release says while acceding to this Convention, Sri Lanka will also become a Party to the Amended Protocol II on Incendiary Weapons such as mines, booby traps and other devices and on Blinding Laser Weapons.

The Cabinet has further approved the submission of a report, on a voluntary basis, under Article VII of the Ottawa Convention on anti-personnel land mines to which Sri Lanka is yet to become a State Party.

Minister Kadirgamar is expected to formally deposit Sri Lanka’s accession to the Convention at the “Treaty Event-2004” to be held in New York from 21-24 September, during the 59th Session of the UN General Assembly.
