[July 16, 2004 - 10.30 GMT]

The 15th International AIDS Conference concluded in Bangkok, Thailand today with around 15,000 people in attendance. Three young Sri Lankans represented the Country at the world’s largest HIV/AIDS conference, which began July 11.

Chethana Premasiri, Pavitra Manikawasagam and Samith Dinesh were chosen by a group of their peers during a special UNICEF forum to discuss HIV/AIDS and young people in Sri Lanka.

According to a UNICEF release young people world wide are at the centre of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with 58% of all people infected being less than 24 years old.  In South Asia, 62% of the 1 million 18-24 year olds that are infected with HIV/AIDS are girls.

In spite of the great risk that young people face the world over, they are also at the forefront of the fight against HIV/AIDS, states the release.
