Germany keen on peace in Sri Lanka

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer called on President Chandrika Kumaratunga this morning. The discussions at President’s House between the visiting delegation and the President were on the stalled peace process and future German investment in Sri Lanka. The President briefed the delegation on the Government’s commitment to reach a negotiated peace acceptable to all communities in Sri Lanka.

The GOSL has moved ahead in formulating the agenda for the talks and is awaiting the LTTE’s response on the resumption of talks the President told the German Minister. Mr. Fischer said his country would like to invest more in Sri Lanka and that they are keenly observing the progress of the peace process.

The President thanked the Foreign Minister and the Government of Germany for their interest in Sri Lanka.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vishva Warnapala, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Germany C. D. Casie Chetty and the Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs H K J R Bandara were associated with the President during her meeting this morning.
