Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar met with Mr. Jack Straw Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, on July 15, at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office during his recent official visit to the UK. Issues of mutual interest to the two countries were discussed during an hour long meeting. The Sri Lankan FM briefed the Foreign Secretary on the current status of the efforts to resume the stalled negotiations between the Government and the LTTE, according to a Foreign Ministry release. Foreign Secretary Straw also referred to the question of Sri Lankan migrants in the UK. He requested that early progress be made on the Arrangement for the Repatriation of Sri Lankan Citizens who’ve entered that country illegally or have overstayed. The British Minister agreed with Minister Kadirgamar that English language training for University students in Sri Lanka, should be considered high bilateral priority and emphasized that the UK would be in a position to assist in this regard.
