Anti-dengue programme launched today

The Government has launched a Dengue Eradication National Programme commencing today, July 23.

The Eradication Programme was decided on at the 106th session of the National Health Council held under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse as directed by President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

The Government has requested Heads of State and private organizations to devote two hours a week from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon on any day of the week to clean up their immediate environment. The public will also be involved in the eradication programme by cleaning up their respective residential environs.

According to the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, from January to date this year 9,819 cases of dengue have been reported out of which 60 cases were fatal.

Health Ministry has required every institution to maintain a special Dengue Eradication Unit to accomplish this task successfully.
