BIMSTEC leaders meet in Bangkok

[July 28, 2004 - 6.45 GMT]

Leaders of the BIMST-EC grouping will meet in Bangkok this week to discuss how they can enlarge trade and economic cooperation among themselves.

BIMST-EC was set up in 1997 to foster socio-economic cooperation among Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Myanmar was admitted as a full member in the same year. Bhutan and Nepal joined the grouping in 2004.

Signing of Free Trade Agreements that would spell low or even zero import duties on goods that are traded within the region is one of the prime objectives of the Bangkok Summit.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga will lead the Sri Lankan delegation to the first Summit of BIMST-EC.
