[July 28, 2004 - 10.00 GMT]

Anthony Hebron, Vice President of External Communications, Limited Brands Inc. in a letter to Sri Lankan Embassy, Washington has expressed “sincere apologies” of Limited Brands Inc. and Victoria’s Secret for using Buddha image for commercial purposes.

According to a Foreign Ministry communiqué he has stated there was “no intention of showing any disrespect to Lord Buddha or Buddhism” and that the company has ceased all sales of the product.

Hebron has further informed that the company which supplied the Bikini design with Buddha image to Victoria’s Secret has also stopped selling the bikini from their catalogue, removed it from their website and issued an open apology.

Following representations made by Buddhist organizations, Foreign Minster Lakshman Kadirgamar directed all heads of Sri Lanka Missions abroad last month, to make representations to the relevant authorities in their countries of accreditation as well as to commercial establishments and take steps to remove the offending items from the marketplace.
