Kadirgamar hold talks with Thai counterpart

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar now in Bangkok at the invitation of the Thai government held official talks with his Thai counterpart Surakiart Sathiarthai yesterday.

According to a Foreign Ministry communiqué, Minister Kadirgamar praised the Thai government for its policy for rural economy and the mechanisms adopted by the government to enhance the living standards of rural communities. The two ministers have agreed to make arrangements for Sri Lankan public officials to visit Thailand to obtain firsthand experience on such mechanisms.

Kadirgamar emphasised the need to build a modern economic relationship on the strong religious and cultural links between the two countries.

The two foreign ministers have agreed to continue bilateral talks regarding free trade between the two countries further to discussions initiated by the previous Sri Lankan government both by perusing a bilateral FTA under the aegis of Sri Lanka.

Thai Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai has assured that his government would assist Sri Lanka in every possible way to achieve lasting peace.

Minister Kadirgamar will join President Chandrika Kumaratunga for the BIMST-EC Summit which opens tomorrow.
