President leaves for BIMSTEC Summit
[July 29, 2004 - 5.00 GMT]

President Chandrika Kumaratunga left for Thailand this morning to attend the BIMST-EC Summit.

BIMST-EC was set up in 1997 to foster socio-economic cooperation among
Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Myanmar was admitted as a full member in the same year. Bhutan and Nepal were admitted this year.

The leaders will discuss the enhancement of trade and economic cooperation at the two-day Bangkok Summit. Several Free Trade Agreements are due to be finalized at this summit that would spell low or even zero import duties on goods traded within the region.
