BIMST-EC concludes

International terrorism and transnational crime and its adverse affects on the economic and social progress the BIMSTEC region was stressed by the seven Heads of State and Government at their Bangkok Summit on Saturday. The leaders agreed to give it urgent priority and co-ordinate efforts to combat terrorism. 

In a declaration at the conclusion of the first BIMST-EC Summit in Bangkok, from July 30 – 31, 2004 the leaders of South and SouthEast Asia also agreed to coordinate efforts to address, transnational issues including HIV/AIDS and other threats to public health such as malaria, tuberculosis, and polio.

The acronym BIMSTEC which earlier stood for Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand - Economic Cooperation has been renamed as Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sector Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMST-EC) after the inclusion of Nepal and Bhutan.

The BIMST-EC Summit 2006 will be held in India.
