[August 2, 2004 - 11.15 GMT]

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) celebrated its silver jubilee today. The SLPA was established on August 01, 1979 merging the Port Commission, Port Cargo Corporation and Port Tally and Security Service.

“An efficiently operated and well administered Port plays a vital role in the development of the import and export trade and enhances investor confidence in the country,” said President Chandrika Kumaratunga in her message to mark the event. She said she was confident the Ports Authority will achieve commercial autonomy with the assistance of the recently established Strategic Enterprise Management Agency.

President commended the SLPA for its contribution to the country’s economic development.

The Minister of Ports Mangala Samaraweera also extended his appreciation to the staff of SLPA for their dedicated work in building the Ports Authority to become a premier organization of the country.
