Minister Wickremanayake to lead ruling alliance

Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake a former Prime Minister has been nominated to lead the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance.

The decision was made at a Central Committee meeting of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party yesterday chaired by President Chandrika Kumaratunga. The nomination of the main constituent of the ruling alliance was unanimous.  Mr. Wickremanayake’s name will be submitted to the UPFA Executive Committee for ratification. Mr. Wickremanatyake currently holds the Cabinet portfolios of Public Security, Law & Order and Buddha Sasana and is also Deputy Minster of Defence.

The position of UPFA leadership fell vacant after President Kumaratunga’s decision to step down due to pressure of work on Wednesday 4th August.
