“Govt. welcomes every peace effort of the LTTE” - Cabinet spokesman
[August 12, 2004 - 10.30 GMT]

Cabinet spokesman Mangala Samaraweera said the Government will always encourage the peace building efforts of the LTTE in a transparent and accountable manner and the Government’s total commitment to the peace process was amply demonstrated by its decision recently to grant duty free vehicles to the LTTE peace secretariat.

“This is why the government kept the public informed of this concession to the LTTE through an official communiqué soon as it was granted,” the Cabinet spokesman said at a media briefing today.

Condemning the killings of two senior members of the EPDP on Tuesday in Trincomalee and Batticaloa, the Cabinet spokesman said it is the belief of the Government the continuation of such political assassinations is a clear violation of the CFA.

“It is the duty of the two signatories of this agreement to ensure such gross violations do not take place,” he further said.

He said that the spate of political killings of this nature in recent times has put a great strain on the peace process which the government is committed to recommence at the earliest.
