Provincial Administration to work in tandem with the Central Government

The Central Government and the Provincial Administrations are to work in tandem in the development projects under a new scheme put in place by the President. A series of meetings with the members of the regional administrations have been planned.

Yesterday [11th August] Members and officials of Uva and North Western Provincial Councils met President Chandrika Kumaratunga. The discussions were centered on the progress of the provincial health and infrastructure development projects. Several policy decisions were made at this meeting.

The President directed the authorities to ensure essential buildings are in of good repair. She said Provincial Base Hospitals should ensure well equipped operation theatres and intensive care units. It was also decided to recruit and train 5,000 nurses to work in these hospitals around the island.

A novel initiative of securing the services of the traditional Ayurvedic physicians for Government Ayurvedic hospitals was also discussed yesterday.

With regard to the development of the rural road network it was felt ad-hoc repairs should be discouraged, the President said finances would be made available to develop the entire road network. To achieve this, the President stressed effective planning is necessary. It was decided that technical knowledge and labour for constructions should essentially be from the local areas.

The Governors, Chief Ministers, Ministers and officials of the Uva and North Western Provinces were at the discussions. Cabinet Ministers from these two regions and several officers from the President’s Office were also in attendance.
