The
Central Government and the Provincial Administrations are to work in tandem
in the development projects under a new scheme put in place by the
President. A series of meetings with the members of the regional
administrations have been planned.
Yesterday [11th August] Members and officials of Uva and North Western
Provincial Councils met President Chandrika Kumaratunga. The discussions
were centered on the progress of the provincial health and infrastructure
development projects. Several policy decisions were made at this meeting.
The President directed the authorities to ensure essential buildings are in
of good repair. She said Provincial Base Hospitals should ensure well
equipped operation theatres and intensive care units. It was also decided to
recruit and train 5,000 nurses to work in these hospitals around the island.
A novel initiative of securing the services of the traditional Ayurvedic
physicians for Government Ayurvedic hospitals was also discussed yesterday.
With regard to the development of the rural road network it was felt ad-hoc
repairs should be discouraged, the President said finances would be made
available to develop the entire road network. To achieve this, the President
stressed effective planning is necessary. It was decided that technical
knowledge and labour for constructions should essentially be from the local
areas.
The Governors, Chief Ministers, Ministers and officials of the Uva and North
Western Provinces were at the discussions. Cabinet Ministers from these two
regions and several officers from the President’s Office were also in
attendance.
