President hands over the Act of Appointment to new Mahanayake

President Kumaratunga today ceremonially handed over the Act of Appointment to the Most Venerable Thibbotuwawe Siddhartha Sri Sumangala Thero, the new Mahanayaka of the Malwatte Chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya.

The ceremony, jointly organized by the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and the Office of the President, was held in the historic Audience Hall in Kandy.

The Supreme Executive Council of Buddhist monks, of the Sri Lanka’s foremost Buddhist Sect, the Malwatte Chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya unanimously appointed Most Venerable Sumangala Thero on June 20, following the passing away of the Most Venerable Rambukwelle Vipassi Thero. Prior to the appointment as the 26th Maha Nayaka of the Malwatte Chapter the 60 year old  Ven. Sumangala Thero held the senior most positions of Anunanayka of the Malwatte chapter and the Chief incumbent of the historic Ridi Maha Vihara in the Kurunegala District.

He was ordained as a novice monk at the age of 13 and received his religious education at the Sangharaja Pirivena of Malwatte. He received his higher ordination, at the Malwatte Mangala Uposhathagaraya in 1964.
