World Food Programme to assist drought victims

[August 20, 2004 - 10.30 GMT]

The World Food Programme (WFP) in response to President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s request has provided 1,750 metric tones of wheat flour. Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation & Reconciliation will distribute the wheat to drought victims in Kurunegala, Puttalam and Anuradhapura districts.

WFP’s assistance is in addition to its ongoing programmes in Sri Lanka. Secretary to Triple R Ministry M. S. Jayasinghe says that the WFP assistance will ease the burden on the Treasury in allocating finances for drought hit areas of the island.

Nearly 600,000 families have been affected by drought in 14 districts. Several Non Governmental Organizations have pledged their support for the special programme launched by the Government to provide relief through the Department of Social Services and District Secretariats.
