Maldivian special assures safety of detainees

[August 24, 2004 - 5.30 GMT]

Special Envoy of Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Ahamed Abdullah yesterday briefed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar on the current situation in the Maldives.

Maldivian security forces arrested more than 200 people following pro-democracy demonstrations earlier this month. According to a Foreign Ministry communiqué, Colombo the envoy assured safety and treatment of those arrested.

“The Government of Sri Lanka hopes that the proposed reforms announced by President Gayoom in June 2004 to promote participatory parliamentary democracy and human rights would be pursued to a conclusion that meets the aspirations of all concerned parties and groups,” the communiqué further said.

As a friendly neighbour Sri Lanka believes that such timely changes which reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people will bring about long-term peace, stability and development in the Maldives.
