The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the main constituent party of the ruling Alliance celebrates its 53rd anniversary today. The SLFP was founded by late Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike on September 2, 1951.

The SLFP won nine Parliamentary seats in 1952. The SLFP-led Alliance, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna was swept into power four years later. Late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike took over the leadership of the party in 1960 following Premier S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike’s assassination the previous year. The Alliance again formed the Government in 1970. Incumbent Chairperson of the SLFP, Chandrika Bandaranaike led the People’s Alliance to victory in 1994 Parliamentary Elections. She became the country’s first woman Executive President the same year.

The party’s 53rd anniversary was marked with the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for a new Party headquarters in Battaramulla today. The Annual Convention of the Party is due to be held in the Southern city of Galle on Saturday September 4.
