President’s UN address coincides
with ‘World Peace Day’
[September

- 11.00 GMT]
This
year the United Nations proposed a tangible goal to help unite our global
community and shift its consciousness. All of civilization will join to
create a Global Ceasefire on the 21st of September and humanity's first day
of peace. Ironically President Chandrika Kumaratunga is to address the 59th
Session of the United Nations General Assembly on this day Tuesday 21st
September; it also coincides with the UN declared World Peace Day.
President Kumaratunga first attended and addressed the General Assembly in
1995 on the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations. This would be the third
occasion President Kumaratunga will be addressing the UN General Assembly
Sessions. This year as well, the President would be among the first few
Leaders to address the General Assembly on the opening day. In 2002 the
President attended and was among a selected few to deliver a key-note
address at the United Nation’s Special Session on Children along with
celebrities such as Nelson Mandela and Bill Gates.
While in New York President Kumaratunga will attend a Meeting of World
Leaders to focus on the “Fight against Hunger & Poverty” at the UN
Headquarters. She is also scheduled to contribute to the World Leaders’
Forum on ‘A Fair Globalization: Creating Opportunities for All’. This
discussion will be based on the Report of the World Commission on the Social
Dimensions of Globalization.
In New York, President Kumaratunga will address the prestigeous Asia Society
on “Conflict Resolution & Peace Building – Lessons from Sri Lanka”. The
President is scheduled to address a Media Conference at the United Nations
Head Quarters on the 21st after her UN address.
