US$ 140 million UNICEF plan to uplift
lives of children

At
the launch of the National Action Plan for Children yesterday, President
Chandrika Kumaratunga said “This is a definite statement of the Government’s
commitment to the advancement of the rights and interests of our children.”
The launching ceremony at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute’s Auditorium
was attended by Cabinet Ministers, officials of UNICEF. Several Child
representatives from the Island’s schools including the North and East were
present. The President who is known for her unswerving efforts to improve
the quality of the lives of children said “My government and I personally
will remain committed to doing our best in little Sri Lanka to add whatever
we can to create a world fit for children and in the process building a
nation that would be fit to produce good and successful citizens for Sri
Lanka.”
In May 2002 at the Special Session in New York, President together with
other global leaders made a commitment to create a world fit for children
and to develop a National Plan of Action. Sri Lanka is one of the first
countries to develop its NPA. The estimated cost of the four-year action
plan (2004-2008) would be Rs. 14 billion (about US$ 140 million).
