President by Proclamation calls for commemoration of World Peace Day

[September 17, 2004 - 11.30 GMT]

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has made a Proclamation that the International Day of Peace be observed throughout Sri Lanka on September 21st 2004 in an appropriate manner.

In 1981 the United Nations declared an International Day of Peace devoted to ‘commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples. The UN in the year 2001 expanded the observance of this day to include the call for a day of global ceasefire and non violence, and invited all nations and peoples to honour a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day.

Beginning on the 20th anniversary in 2002, the UN General Assembly set 21 September as the now permanent date for the International Day of Peace.

To raise awareness among the citizens of Sri Lanka about the Day, President Kumaratunga by Proclamation has called on all Government departments and agencies, organizations, schools, places of worship and individuals, to commemorate the International Day of Peace in an appropriate manner. This may include a moment of silence, and public awareness activities in order to help establish a global day of peace beginning in our homes, our communities and between nations.
