President Chandrika Kumaratunga said yesterday that her Government is preparing children of this country to face global challenges through discussion and negotiation rather than resorting to bombs and bullets.
Addressing the inaugural session of the South Asia Regional Mid-Term Review of the “Yokohama Global Commitment 2001” at Colombo’s Hotel Taj Samudra, President Kumaratunga said leaders and officials of South Asian countries should work with more commitment to solve issues relating to children in the region especially child trafficking and child labour.
President Kumaratunga said education was the best way to solve issues relating to children. “We in Sri Lanka have already embarked on education reforms,” the President added. “We are targeting the modernization of education to make a complete man or a woman who can face the challenges of globalization.”
Representatives from Afghanistan and the seven SAARC countries - Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka - are participating in this three-day conference, organized by the UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia from September 29-October 1.
