New Police chief assumes duties

The new Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando assumed duties yesterday. President Chandrika Kumaratunga appointed Chandra Fernando as the 29th Police Chief of Sri Lanka Police on September 30.

Fernando, an old boy of St. Peter's College, Bambalapitiya and Thurstan College, Colombo has obtained an Honours Degree in Modern History from Sri Jayawardhanapura University. He lectured History of Political Theory at the same University. 

In 1971 he joined the Police Department as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. He was promoted a Superintendent of Police in 1980 and in 1985 a Senior Superintendent of Police.
