[October 8, 2004 - 6.00 GMT] China has granted Rs.500 million to Sri Lanka to support the development projects of the government. Chinese Ambassador Sun Guoxiang and Treasury Secretary P.B. Jayasundara signed the agreement on behalf of China and Sri Lanka respectively. Earlier yesterday the Chinese delegation headed by Chinese Communist Party's senior member Wu Guanzheng called on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse for a meeting at Temple Trees. The 50-member Chinese delegation is in Colombo on a goodwill visit in response to an invitation extended by Prime Minister Rajapakse. Head of the visiting delegation Guanzheng is a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of China's Communist Party which is the party's apex body.
The Chinese delegation will visit the Parliament today. They will meet the Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition and party leaders during the visit. Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar will call on Guanzheng this afternoon. The Chinese leader is also expected to pay a courtesy call on President Chandrika Kumaratunga later today.
