“Government’s counter proposals to the LTTE’s ISGA are ready and waiting. The moment the LTTE is ready to receive it; we are willing to send it,” said Cabinet Spokesman Mangala Samaraweera at the weekly cabinet briefing today. Minister Samaraweera chose to be tight lipped when asked if the proposals were ‘drastically different’ or based on the 2000 Draft Constitution, he just said it was a “response” to the LTTE’s proposals with the hope of recommencing talks at the earliest. He said that the proposals will certainly be made public at the “appropriate time”. Refuting reports that it was the government which is not yet ready for talks he said, “ whatever they say you can judge for yourself whether the government is ready or not. Ms. Micheline Calmy-Rey Switzerland’s Foreign Minister had said earlier this week that the delay in resuming peace talks is due to a lack of confidence between the two parties. When asked what steps the government has taken to address this question of confident the Cabinet Spokesman said, “For the last six months we have done everything possible any government can do to restore the confidence of the LTTE to come back to the negotiating table. In the first place we have made sure the CFA stands. Government has not violated the ceasefire agreement at all in the last six months and on the other hand government has also conceded a lot of the LTTE ideas in order to recommence talks”. Referring to reports of LTTE renegade Karuna entering democratic political stream, Samaraweera said that the government always welcomes anyone who enters the democratic process. “We hope that the elections commissioner would take the necessary action to register them as a political party,” he concluded.
