The Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday 13th October approved a proposal put forward by the Minister of Women’s Empowerment Ms Sumeda Jayasena to allocate a third of the nominations for women in future local government elections. A Cabinet sub committee was appointed to look into the possibilities to make the necessary constitutional amendments and submit a report within two months. The Minister of Constitutional Reforms D E W Gunasekera, Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, Minister of Justice and Judicial Reforms John Seneviratne, and Minister Sumeda Jayasena will form the committee. Cabinet approval was also given to launch the project initiated by Minister of Small and Rural Industries, Lal Kantha to develop a thousand villages known for their small Industries. A project aimed at increasing domestic production would start in Hambantota involving 200 villages in the region. Cabinet granted approval
to re-cultivate 150,000 acres of abandoned paddy lands. The project would
kick start with the cultivation of 500 acres of paddy land in the suburbs of
Colombo on Saturday, October 16. The event coincides with the World Food
Day.
