Although multiple births are not uncommon in Sri Lanka, the country recorded its first set of quintuplets on 6th October. The three girls and two boys were born in Colombo’s Hospital for Women at Castle Street.

These children were born to 29 year old Chamila Weerasekera and Nimal Piyatissa a 35 year old policeman. They have become parents for the first time and are delighted the children are doing well and still under the care of the hospital.

However Nimal Piyatissa has begun wondering how he would take care of his wife and five babies with his fixed salary. He told us “My present home in Pilimatalawa close to Kandy is a virtual bed-sitter”.

There have been offers of help from several people most of who are curious visitors to the hospital.

Those who wish to help this couple who have grown to family of seven almost overnight could send their contributions to Current Account No. 1012 5016 9044 of Sampath Bank - Fort Branch.
