The Cabinet on Wednesday granted approval to give permanency to over 2000 school teachers island-wide. The President who holds the Education portfolio submitted the cabinet memorandum.

A large number persons recruited as ‘voluntary teachers’ on an ad hoc basis over the years have long been yearning for permanent appointments. During the past years they have held frequent demonstrations, picketing, sathyagrahas and fasting campaigns to win claims for permanency. Following Wednesday’s the Cabinet decision the most recent week-long fasting campaign by a group of voluntary teachers was called off yesterday.

The Education Department's recruitment procedure stipulates that voluntary teachers with GCE Advanced Level or Ordinary Level qualifications should have completed a minimum three years as teachers to be eligible for permanent appointments.
