Ministry of Education issued a communiqué today categorically rejecting that the Government has decided to close down 3,500 under-developed schools in the island. This was in response to such a claim made by the Inter-University Students’ Federation.

The Education Ministry says on the contrary the Government, in consultation with the Provincial authorities, has already allocated funds to re-develop the so called ‘under-developed schools’. Also an intensive programme viz ‘Navodya School Project’ is being implemented at Divisional Secretariat level with a view raising the standards of these schools.

The Education Ministry which portfolio comes directly under the under the President  assured all concerned that  it has no plans  whatsoever to close down any school. The Ministry communiqué further says the Provincial Administrations have also been requested to provide additional funds required to develop schools in difficult areas.
