New townships for the disadvantaged Eastern Muslims [October 26, 2004 - 07.30 GMT]

National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) has launched on several projects to uplift the living conditions of village dwellers in the Eastern districts. A majority of the populace in these rural areas are Muslims. The President has allocated a sum of 15 Million rupees from the President’s Fund to help accelerate activities and complete them by the end of the current Month of Ramadan, particularly work related to housing and drinking water.

Three housing complexes with 100 units each are under construction; the project cost is estimated to be Rs. 45 million. The NHDA ensures the availability of water, accessibility and other social infrastructure for these housing estates. A health centre, a school and a market centre will be also constructed in each housing complex. The first of the three model village expected to be completed soon is the Islamabad Housing project in Kalmunai.

The NHDA plans on developing more such small townships for the most disadvantaged Muslim groups in the Ampara District.
