President
Kumaratunga who also holds the Cabinet portfolio for Education has decided
to enhance facilities for tertiary education. Work in this regard will
commence with immediate effect. A sum
of Rs. 1, 000 million will be allocated for the new Uva University in
Badulla. The Trincomalee Koneshapuri Campus of the Eastern University is to
be developed at a cost of Rs. 91.1 million. Legislation
is being drafted under the University Act No. 16 of 1978 for the
establishment of a National Center for Advanced Studies (NCAS) in Humanities
and Social Sciences.
