‘Peace talks should begin soon’ President tells Yasushi Akashi

Japan’s Special Representative to Peace Building, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation in Sri Lanka Mr. Yasushi Akashi called on President Chandrika Kumaratunga at President’s House this evening. The President described to Mr. Akashi the recent developments in the peace process and the importance of beginning direct peace talks between the GOSL and the LTTE as soon as possible.

The President also thanked the Government of Japan for its generous assistance and support to Sri Lanka’s economic development and to consolidating peace in the country.

Associated with the President at today’s discussions were Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and Government officials. Mr. Akashi was accompanied by Mr. Akio Suda, Japan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sri Lanka and Japanese Government officials.
