Foreign Ministry on alleged abduction of Sri Lankan national in Iraq
[October 30, 2004]

Several media on Friday quoting Al Jazeera Television have reported that two drivers, one from Sri Lanka and one from Bangladesh have been abducted in Iraq reportedly by a group named "Ansarul Sunnah" on October 28, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

According to available information the two persons were working for a Kuwaiti Transport Company named "Jassim Transport Company".

The two drivers have been abducted reportedly as they were trying to enter a US airbase.

The Sri Lanka Embassies in Lebanon, Kuwait and Qatar are making all efforts to verify the reports and ascertain the actual situation. Investigations are also being conducted to verify whether the person named as Dinesh Darmendra is in fact a Sri Lankan national.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Embassy in Saudi Arabia has informed that it is not clear whether the truck drivers were working in Iraq or had entered Iraq from a neighbouring country.

The Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the developments.
