Murali on humanitarian mission to NE [November 04, 2004 - 9:30 GMT]

Sri Lanka’s celebrated cricketer   Muttiah Muralitharan visited North and East on Monday as a goodwill ambassador of the World Food Programme (WFP) on a humanitarian mission

"As a sportsman, all I can say is that Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims come together to play cricket side by side," Muralitharan has reportedly told Reuters. "Likewise, the politicians and the LTTE must come together and make peace for the good of this country's people”.

To promote food aid and education, Murali headed an international fund raising event, " Walk the World," organized by WPF on 20 June this year. The walk raised nearly US $ 5,000 for the WFP school feeding program in Sri Lanka.

Muralitharan was named in October as one of Time Magazines' "Asia Heroes," a gallery of 20 Asians who have made a remarkable achievement before the age of 40. Time magazine noted that he "has changed the face of the game (of cricket) and, no less significant, given hope to a nation torn by 21 tears bloody civil war."
