President on an official visit to India [November 04, 2004 - 9:30 GMT]

President Chandrika Kumaratunga left for New Delhi today, the President was accompanied by Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and Power and Energy Minister Susil Premjayantha.

During her 5 –day official visit the President is scheduled to meet several national leaders in the Indian capital. They include President Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Leader of the ruling Congress Alliance Shrimathi Sonia Gandhi. Former Prime Minster Atal Bihari Vajpayee is also scheduled to meet President Kumaratunga. Issues of mutual concern and ways and means of further strengthening bilateral relations will be discussed during the talks. Apart from a review of bilateral relations, the visit will also provide an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the peace process.

While in New Delhi the President will deliver the keynote speech at the Hindustan Times seminar viz ‘India and the World: A Blueprint for Partnership and Growth’. Her lecture will be on ‘Unity and Diversity – Keeping Asia Together’.

Meetings with Indian business leaders are also scheduled during the President’s 5-day working visit. President Kumaratunga and her entourage will travel to Buddha Gaya during the visit.
