Sri Lanka will be the cynosure at World Travel Market (WTM) when the world’s biggest travel and tourism event opens today in London as the country has the biggest contingent from the industry.

Tourism Minister Anura Bandaranaike will be the chief guest of the opening ceremony of the Sri Lankan booth. Star cricketer Muralitharan will be a major attraction at the Sri Lankan pavilion today. A competition has been organized by a UK travel magazine to present a cricket ball and a bat signed by the cricketer to the winner. In another competition, the winner will be awarded a piece of jewellery studded with genuine Sri Lankan gemstones.

Theme for Sri Lanka’s tourism pavilion is the culture and beach and the stand will depict the grand entrance of Yapahuwa and a beach scene.

The WTM celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, with 5,000 exhibitors covering over 190 countries.

Britain is Sri Lanka’s biggest tourist generating market.
