Simple ceremony to mark a decade of Kumaratunga Presidency

Today the 10th anniversary of President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s Presidency began with a simple religious ceremony at the President’s House. Dignitaries from the four major religions of the country were invited to bless the President. 

Buddhist religious rites were performed by Venerable Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Nayake Thero. Hindu Religious rituals by the Chief Incumbent of the Munneswaram Kovil Soma Saamy; the Catholic Archbishop of Colombo Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis blessed the President, while Alhaj Abdulla Cader Moulavi administered the Islamic religious rites. 

An alms giving was offered to ten Members of Buddhist clergy.

This afternoon President Kumaratunga will preside over a meeting at the Sri Bodhi playgrounds in Gampaha to evaluate the services rendered during her tenure as Head of State and launch the “Sanwardhana Sangramaya (Development Drive) From ten years of renaissance – towards a prosperous tomorrow would be the theme of today’s programme.
