President Kumaratunga on state visit to Iran

President Chandrika Kumaratunga left for Tehran yesterday, 23rd November. The President is on a two day state visit to Iran at the invitation of President Mohammed Khatami. President Kumaratunga was accompanied by Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, Power and Energy Minister Susil Premjayantha and senior officials.

In Iran the President will hold wide ranging discussions with the Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on issues of mutual concern. During the visit, a Preferential Trade Agreement and several Memoranda of Understanding are to be signed.

Minister Rantansiri Wickremanayake will act as Minister of Defence till the President’s return. The Education portfolio will be administered by Minister Mangala Samaraweera - School Education and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena - Higher Education.
