New Defence Secretary

Major General Asoka Jayewardene is the new Secretary to the Ministry of Defence; his appointment took effect from 1st December 2004. Major General Jayewardene was the Governor of North-East Province before this appointment.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga made this appointment under the powers vested in her under Article 52(1) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

The post of Secretary Defence fell vacant after the President acceded to the request of Mr. Cyril Herath, the former Secretary, that he be relieved of his duties.
