Parliamentary Committee to study escalating crime rate
[December 2, 2004 - 10.45 GMT

A Parliamentary Select Committee was appointed in November to look into the serious escalation of grave crimes and murders in every part of the country.

The Committee will study the causes for the increased crime rate and whether deficiencies in the present judicial system have influenced this increase.

With the crime rate rising at a disturbing rate in the country, the Government decided to reactivate death penalty for rape, murder and narcotic crimes with effect from November 20.

The 21-member committee chaired by Minister of Justice and Judicial Reforms W D J Senewiratne comprise all political parties in the House.

The Select Committee would entertain written representations on the subject before December 15, 2004 in order to determine if it would be necessary to introduce new legislation or to amend existing legislation.
